Medical Grad Saving Lives
We are excited to share with you one of Remember Nhu’s most powerful sponsorship success stories from 2020, about a bright medical graduate used by God to bring hope to her city during a global pandemic and lockdowns.
May Tazi came into Remember Nhu’s care as a young girl in the nation of Myanmar (SE Asia). She was discovered in a small village of the Shan State, where civil war was raging between the government military and a local armed group. May had lost her mom when she was little, and her father was struggling to take care of May and her five siblings—having to be gone often for work in the fields. Since May lived near notorious trafficking operations, the pastor in her village realized she was at very high risk due to being an unsupervised female in destitute poverty.
Thankfully the pastor contacted our Country Director, and May was brought to a children’s home and sponsored, along with her two biological sisters. May was able to go to school for the first time. “I realized when she first came into the children’s home, she was not the brightest student—but she was a very hard worker,” our house parent notes about May. “I believe she understood the importance of education for her future as Remember Nhu always stressed to her, so she worked very hard, and it paid off. She received very good grades.”
May was able to excel in school while growing closer to God and her sisters in the home. “May was not from a Christian background,” her house parent says. “Growing up they worshipped spirits (animism). But she received the gospel and grew in her faith in God in the children’s home.”
We asked May about her experience growing closer to God in the homes. “It was the first time that I heard God’s voice in my heart,” May reflects. “Before studying, I prayed. I feel that when I pray, I can memorize the lessons better. When I faced difficulty, I prayed. I realized that God can make impossible things possible for me. When my friends praised me for my good grades, in fact, it was not by my strength but by His grace.”
Graduating high school, May was accepted into a collegiate Nursing program and her sponsors helped to fund her college education. In February of 2020, we received the joyful news that May graduated college with a degree in Nursing. “It was a very exciting moment in my life,” May said. “I couldn’t think much. I was so happy that my dad was able to participate in my graduation (it was a very long journey for him to come to the city). I imagined how bad my life could have been if I did not get into the children’s home and go to school. I am so thankful.”
Upon graduating, May accepted a nursing position at the city’s government hospital with a position start date in March. However, you may recall what also happened in March of 2020…the COVID-19 virus unexpectedly swept the globe, including the nation of Myanmar. Talk about a challenging first month on the job at a hospital! However, May rose to the challenge, and served the Lord by loving and serving patients in the hospital.
To us, May Tazi’s story is such a beautiful picture of the impact supporters like you are making in the lives of Remember Nhu children. May was a previously at-risk girl, with a statistical likelihood of being exploited, perhaps one day facing the fate of HIV or malnutrition in the child sex trade. But instead, she was brought to a Remember Nhu home where she was given safety, food, a quality education—and she came to know Jesus as Lord and Savior, following His leading to work in the medical field.
Instead of facing sex slavery or death, May now spent a whole year helping to save lives from COVID-19 (and many other fates) in Myanmar! At Remember Nhu, we see these types of one-eighty redemption stories in the lives of children all the time. Thank you for your support that enables us to help children like May.
